{Typical Day} March 22, 2014 | The Flower Fields

March 22, 2014

The flower fields in Carlsbad are beautiful. It’s not Washington, but it’s pretty. I was a little surprised that we weren’t allowed anywhere near the actual flower fields. They’re roped off with plastic tape and black plastic-lined gutters. When you grow up with La Conner at your fingertips, it’s not quite the same. I understand they’re protecting the flowers from being trampled by the masses. But I grew up walking up and down the rows of tulips every year, so this experience was a little sub par to those I’ve had in the Northwest. But the tractor ride was worthwhile. It was fun to watch Josiah enjoy riding around in a noisy machine, and the views of the flowers backed by endless ocean was pretty spectacular. And the “Santa’s Village” playground was pretty cool. Of course, that was your favorite part. I’m glad we went.

We are going to be frequenting this little RV campground by the ocean. It’s a keeper. For in city camping, close to home, with all the ammenities we could ask for, a quick walk from the Pacific, it’s perfect. They were having some technical difficulties when we arrived this time, so we killed an hour or so playing in the game room. Mimi and I realized how rusty we are at ping pong, Adela swept the shuffleboard sand around, and Josiah chased a ping pong ball all over the room. Those things are hard to hold on to, aren’t they son? But you never took your eyes off that pirate in the corner for long. You were a little concerned by his shady presence.

I really wanted to get a picture of you knocking the tower down, but being a baby with your own mind, today – because I had my camera out and wanted you to do it – you refused. You just looked at it and looked and it and looked at it until I got tired of waiting and gave up. Silly. Usually you are a tornado of destruction, throwing things, dropping things, dumping things, knocking things over and putting all sorts of things in places they don’t belong. Today, you just looked at it. Sigh.
