{Typical Day} May 24, 2014 | Grubstake Parade

Doughnuts on parade day has become a yearly tradition. First stop, Jelly Doughnut. Second stop, pickup Mimi. Third stop, walk to the truck we parked on the parade route at 6:30am earlier that morning. We had planned on saving all the doughnuts for during the parade, but Josiah, my dear, you freaked out when the doughnuts went into a white paper bag instead of into your mouth, so we let you guys split one in the shop.

It was hot. The parade is not that exciting. But it’s a small town thing. I kind of love that it gets to be a part of your childhoods.

{Typical Day} May 23, 2014 | 49 Palms Oasis

This was our first 3-mile hike as a family of four, the 49 Palms Oasis trail in 29 Palms. This is true desert hiking. Rocks, more rocks, sand, more sand, sun, and more sun. But we saw lots of lizards, and after climbing up about 1000 giant rock steps, we got to see a real oasis, nestled in the mountains up above 29 Palms.

You are a tough kid, Adela. You scraped up your legs a bit. You sweated. You persevered. Less than 100 steps from the finish line, you sat down and had a moment, but you picked yourself back up, conquered, and set a new record for yourself. I’m proud of you. And you asked to go hiking  again the next day. 🙂

[Typical Day} May 17, 2014 | Hiking

May 17, 2014

It’s the dawn of a new day for our family. We have finally acquired the baby-carrying backpack we’ve been eyeballing for Josiah. And we are now ready for the trails! Hiking is something that Daddy and I did together in the first years of our relationship. It’s one of the things we shared that allowed us to fall in love with each other and become best friends, and now we get to share it with you guys, the product of our love. It’s wonderful and we have big plans to hit as many trails as we can. We did our test run in the Morongo Preserve, taking about a 2.5 mile hike up a little hill and through a canyon. It was the perfect day, overcast, warm and beautiful. Adela, you are a champ. You got a little tired on the biggest hill, but that was the only time I heard you mention how “hard” hiking is. But you said it as an observation, not as a complaint. Josiah, you are okay as long as we’re moving. You want to get out and walk around whenever we pause, and you let us know. But for a first run, I’d give you a passing grade. It’s only for a couple of years, son. Soon enough you’ll be keeping up with us on your own two legs. We picked wildflowers, looked for animals, learned about ant colonies, and the effects of rain in the desert, and spotted a rattlesnake! We had to throw a rock at it to get it out of the trail, and it even rattled at us when we walked by it.2014-May---Family-439-WEB2014-May---Family-442-WEB2014-May---Family-448-WEB2014-May---Family-450-WEB2014-May---Family-454-WEB2014-May---Family-457-wEB2014-May---Family-459-WEB2014-May---Family-464-WEB2014-May---Family-466-wEB2014-May---Family-471-WEB2014-May---Family-474-WEB2014-May---Family-478-wEB2014-May---Family-486-wEB2014-May---Family-506-WEB2014-May---Family-511-WEB2014-May---Family-513-WEB2014-May---Family-525-WEB2014-May---Family-527-WEB2014-May---Family-540-WEB2014-May---Family-541-WEB
