[Typical Day} May 12, 2014 | Zelda & Brushing

This handful of photos sums up a few staples of our typical days in the past few weeks.

We get up, eat breakfast, and then we play Zelda. Adela, you are obsessed. I decided to get it out a few weeks ago when I was having a yen after several years of not playing. You are incredible. I had no idea how well and how quickly you would grasp the concepts of my favorite video game, or that you would love it as much as I always have. It’s awesome! Something we can share together. You have stopped asking to watch TV and have started asking me to “play your game!” You help me figure out where to go and what to do, you help me spot bugs to catch and let me know when I need to pick up amber relics and rupees and when I need to hit switches, and remind me when I’ve already gone certain directions. It’s so fun. Pretty soon I’m going to break out the Mario Brothers and see if you can work the controllers yourself. I think I might be unleashing a beast here, but it’s alright. Everything in moderation. Nintendo is one of my favorite childhood memories. I have always been a fan, and I’m stoked I get to share that with you. Even Josiah likes to sit and watch us play.

After Jo’s morning nap, we’ve been putting on our bathing suits and making lunch/smoothies, and eating outside by the kiddie pool. Despite the pouty photo of you in the naughty chair for grabbing from your brother and not listening to me when I asked you to give it back, it’s generally a good time. You get over your little time out stints quickly. It still almost always works to stop and change your behavior. You’re up to 5 minutes now. And you hate missing out on the fun to be had. You generally have a smile on your face and a ready apology at the end of 5 minutes. You have your own mind, girl. It can be exhausting. But you’re so cute and sweet too.

Our nighttime routine has recently changed to include the brushing of Josiah’s teeth, and you love it, son. It is obvious that you feel so big and grown up. You smile and jiggle that brush back and forth in your mouth for as long as I’ll let you. It’s becoming a challenge to wrest it back from you so that we can help make sure you get all those little teeth (you have 4 molars and are cutting your eye teeth right now.) It’s full on melt down sometimes when we take the brush away. Apparently dental hygiene is important to you.

We brought Jeffrey home from the groomers today, all good-smelling and pretty. You guys get a kick out of opening her carrier and letting him loose. He looks kind of silly and he’s always a little cantankerous after spending a few hours surrounded by the smell of dogs, but he loves the pets he gets without all that hair in between his skin and your hands. And I just love the sanity that comes with not having to pick clumps of hair up off the floor every few minutes. He’s getting old, our kitty. I think he’s turning 13, or is it 14?,  right about now. But he’s still a handsome guy.

{Typical Day} May 5, 2014 | Dr. Appointments

May 5, 2014

We finally made it to your 4 year (although we’re a late since Adela is now 4.5) and 18 month checkups. They checked your ears and eyes for the first time, Adela. You did well on the vision test and bombed the hearing test, but I have a feeling that has more to do with not understanding the concept than an actual hearing problem. They told us not to worry, that they’ll check it again next visit. What did concern me just a little is that your blood pressure was high. They checked it twice and got elevated readings both times. You didn’t seem agitated or nervous and you did an awesome job holding still while they took it. So I’m not sure what’s going on there. They asked us to bring you back in a couple of weeks to test it again. There’s a chance that you were fighting off a little virus. I’m thinking maybe that’s why. Hoping it was something simple like that.

Otherwise you’re both healthy. You both average out to about the 25th percentile. Josiah, you’ve grown a lot. You’re not all the way up to 37th percentile for height and 21st percentile for weight, a dramatic improvement from when you weren’t even registering on the chart. Adela, you’re right in that 25th percentile range for both height and weight. You have a perfect growth curve, perfectly petite. Josiah, your head is right about in the 50th percentile unlike your sister who has always been in the 90th. You guys probably won’t care about those numbers, but I’m your Mom, so I find it interesting, even if I am the only one.

You both got a couple of vaccines. Adela, I was so proud of you. I told you that you were going to get shots and you were a little afraid, but SO brave. You held so still and didn’t even cry.  Josiah, you hate being in those exam rooms. I have no idea how you remember, but you sure seem to. You whine and strain toward the door and try to turn the handle to get out if we set you on the floor. And that crinkly paper on the exam table, you hate it! But we survived your volume level. We offered you a goodie for after and you chose a chocolate chip cookie, a well-deserved treat for the drive home.
