May 2015 | Week Four | Cap & Gown

This is the week you graduate from preschool Adela. In advance of your ceremony I took you out into the desert to take a few pictures of you in your cap and gown. It was dreadful. So windy. Your cap wouldn’t stay on your head. You were concentrating so hard on trying to not let it fly off that I didn’t get much eye contact or smiles from you, but you get the picture. Still beautiful. Even when battling wind. And I’m really proud of you, baby. You just had your evaluation for Kindergarten this week too, and you passed with flying colors. All check marks on every single thing. You didn’t miss anything. Your only tiny struggle was an old one, switching n’s and u’s and m’s and w’s. No big deal. The teacher who did your evaluation was impressed with your focus and eye contact and ability to follow instructions and not be distracted. You knew all your sounds. You knew all your colors, shapes, numbers, counted to 20 no sweat. You’re officially kindergarten ready! Now me, on the other hand, I’m tearing up just sitting here thinking about it. I am not ready for you to be gone all day, every day. I’m not. It actually hurts. I hope that I surprise myself next year and end up not finding it as difficult as it seems it will be… but I don’t know. Even 3 half days seems like a lot sometimes. I get you for such a short time. I’m excited for all the experiences that you’ll have in school, but I’m not ready to miss out on them either. Not sure where this road leads… maybe to homeschooling. But that’s a big maybe. One day at a time. We’ll try it and see what happens.

Josiah, you’ve started putting on your own shoes. Or trying anyway. And your sock gloves crack me up. Every morning now, when we go into your room to get you up, you have unzipped your sleep sack, taken off your socks and put them on your hands. You just love gloves. Socks are just as good apparently.  And your sleep sack. It’s ridiculous! I have to take a better picture to show you what your father is making you sleep in these days (you can sort of see in the photos below.) It’s your sisters. She wore it from about 6 months until she was almost 3. And you’ve been wearing it since you were a few months old. It’s pink. But it’s so faded now, you can hardly tell, haha! He won’t let me buy a new one! It is *literally* falling apart…. literally *threadbare.* It’s funny. His justification is that you won’t need it for much longer. Soon you’ll be in a big boy bed, and it’s now summertime so you shouldn’t need a sleep sack anyway.

We got to bbq at Mimi and Papi’s house and enjoy their back yard, with them back in town. In the photo, you’re sharing your carrots with the ants. And Adela got a lesson in how to kick a soccer ball the right way from x-player Daddy.  Lastly, we spent a day in Whitewater with Mimi. We hiked in, just a bit, and set up for a half a day. It really was perfect. Perfectly warm without being too hot… the wind and the water. We collected rocks and enjoyed the sun and let you guys splash around for hours. We’ll be going back for sure! I can’t believe we’ve never done this before! For a day trip, it’s better than the ocean! It’s only a half hour drive (instead of a 2.5 hour drive), and it’s contained enough that I didn’t have to worry about you guys wandering too far or getting in too deep. It’s just perfect, shallow, running water ideal for splashing and cooling off in.

May 2015 | Week Three| They’re Back!

We got our tushies in gear and hiked Whitewater this week. We’ve visited a few times, but this was the first time we actually took the walk up the mountain and back down. Adela, I thought you might be intolerable since it’s been a while since we’ve seriously hiked and I wasn’t sure how well your little legs would cope. But you surprised me and made me proud. You schooled those switchbacks! About 3.5 miles up and down, enjoying perfect Spring breezes, collecting rocks and flowers. We also welcomed Mimi and Papi back home for a couple of weeks. Your reunion was a sweet sight. Then, we headed to Disneyland, cramming in one last trip before all the Summer blackout dates. We spent 3 days with Mimi and Papi joining us for the middle day. The nice thing about being regular attendees of Disneyland (other than the obvious awesomeness of it) is that it takes all the pressure off to get it all done. We’ve done it all, so we can pick and choose when we’re there and do what makes sense, go where the lines are shortest, and really enjoy being there without being in a perpetual race. I’d say this was one of our most relaxed trips yet. I relied on the phone to take our photos again which was also a nice break. I love photographing Disney but not having to carry around my camera and worry about banging it on everything was sweet relief.

May 2015 | Week Two | Broken Ground

Adela, we finally made it to your five year Dr. appointment… now, that you’re 5 and a half. I thought you’d have to get shots, so I prepared you. You weren’t happy about it, but so brave. And then we found out you didn’t need any. You still got a treat afterwards. We also celebrated Mother’s day by sitting in traffic most the day…er… I mean, going to the Midevil Dinner and Tournament in Buena Park. It was interesting. A cool horse show and a decent meal at the same time. Worth being in traffic for 7 hours? No. But otherwise it was fun. We’ve broken ground in our backyard! We’ve been cooking out there in the summer for years. This summer we’re going to have shade! A new concrete patio has now been poured, and there are guys in the backyard staining the wood for a new pergola. Eventually we also hope to have a bbq island and a fireplace out there. Hopefully it’ll be a place where we’ll enjoy many family meals, and make memories with each other and friends for many years to come.

May 2015 | Week One | Cooperative Play

There’s been a lot of doctoring between the two of you lately. Actually, more than just doctoring. Also picnicking, vacationing, housing, and many other forms of pretend play. Let May 2015 be recorded as the month when the two of you began cooperative play in earnest. I LOVE IT. It is so sweet, fun, relieving to find the two of you *entertaining each other* for the first time. At 2.5 and 5, you have managed to find a way to find activities in common. Adela, you are the little ring leader of course, giving instructions and commands, directing and taking the lead. But you’re very sweet about it usually. You ask. You’re a good little friend. “Josiah, do you want to sit here?” Josiah, do you want to lay down? Okay, now take your medicine. You’re sick. Okay, now let me listen to your heart.” And Josiah, saying “okay… okay… okay… me turn!” 🙂 The two of you playing together without my intervention for an hour or so at a time has become a regular occurrence. There are still many battles and some yelling matches and some chasing each other round when the other has what you yourself want. I have to intervene sometimes, but mostly, I’ve been trying to let you guys sort it out on your own. If you want stop arguing over something, I just take it and put it where neither one of you can have it. I don’t have to do that too often though. Adela, you’re really good at taking my advice about finding a solution both of you can live with. You forget sometimes, but I remind you, and you’ll do things like get a second pot out, if you’re both arguing over one of them. I can see you maturing before my eyes. It’s neat. You’re definitely developing those firstborn sibling traits.

Josiah, you managed to get yourself out of your crib for the first time this week. Apparently, Daddy came downstairs one morning to find you waddling around in your sleep sack, holding on your teetee, eerily quiet. You piled up all the stuff in your crib and hopped on over the edge somehow. You haven’t done it again since… at least to our knowledge. And you were so proud when you showed me how you accomplished your acrobatic feat.

I am once again making more of a conscious effort to spend time with you guys doing fun crafts and activities. It’s so easy for the days to just go by, filled with obligations and responsibilities. I want to make sure we’re carving out fun and creative times just because. Before I know it, you’ll be older and busier and it will get even harder. This week, we made Dinosaur Mountain out of homemade play dough and then made it “errupt.”
