Big Day – Disneyland!

Your first trip to Disneyland, the day after your second birthday. We’ve been counting the days. Despite all the naysayers who said that 2 was too young. Pshaw. You rocked it baby. I am so proud of you. This day will live in my memory as one of the best days we’ve had with you yet. I don’t have a negative thing to say about it. It was wonderful. And you did great. You loved it, embraced it, enjoyed every minute. You didn’t throw one fit, run away, get lost, or complain about one line. You held our hands, looked in wonder, took it all in. You are not a typical 2-year old, something we already knew. You’re special. And you made us all smile all day long. I’m still smiling thinking about it. And we CAN NOT wait to go back!

Not only did Daddy and I get to go with you, Mima, Papi and Tia Carmen also got to come along for this big first and we were all in seventh heaven getting to share this experience with you. I adore Disneyland. I’ve gone most years of my life, many years multiple times. We hadn’t been since you were born. But it was worth the wait.

Honestly, I didn’t take nearly enough photos. I wish I’d taken more (and brought more equipment). But then I also don’t because, when I wasn’t taking photos, I was enjoying being in the moment and I think that’s just as important.

We put you in the stroller every now and then when we needed to cover some distance, but most of the day you walked. We bought one of those cute stuffed animal backpack/leashes and put it on you for about 2 minutes. You hated it. And you didn’t need it. There was not a single time you took off or didn’t listen. Seriously, you are so good about staying with us, coming when you’re called, understanding that you can’t wander off. Not saying it couldn’t happen. Obviously you had multiple pairs of eyes on you or hands on you at all times, but really you are very, very good about staying with us. We prefer holding your hand over the leash anyway. So, we put that thing away and didn’t take it back out for the rest of the day.

You got a cute little birthday button that you wore (and actually liked wearing) almost the entire day. Every single character, cast member, ride operator, meal provider wished you a happy birthday every time they saw you. And they all called you princess. So cheesy, but so cool. Happy Birthday, Princess! It was awesome.

I really wanted to get that shot… the one of you in front of the castle, but it was the wrong time of day and we didn’t make it happen this time. This was the best I got. Next time for sure. 🙂

This montage is typical of your waiting-in-line experiences. Holding hands, smiling, climbing rails, people-watching. This was when we were in line for your first Pirates experience. Papi held you for your first boat ride and he claims you didn’t show a single bit of distress even at the drops. My brave girl.

Your favorite “ride” might have been Tom Sawyer’s Island (is it still called that?). You loved riding the raft, running up and down the stairs, exploring the caves, pumping the pumps, crossing the bridges, making decisions. I let you choose where we’d go at every juncture, and you’d immediately point, sometimes say “da de” (that way), and take off determinedly.

It was so great that we got to share this with family too. Every one is in love with you and the great thing was that you shared your affection with everyone equally. It was really sweet, and I think a gift from God, that you loved on each of us. We were all so excited to be there with you and you really did share it with all of us. Sometimes you’d  decide that you wanted to sit on Tia’s lap. Sometimes you wanted Daddy to hold you. Sometimes you wanted Papi to hold your hand. Your sweet little self made us all smile and we all felt like a big part of your experience. I feel blessed that it turned out that way, that you were so equal-opportunity. 🙂

We hope we get to share this experience with the rest of the family that couldn’t be here this time sometime soon.

We hadn’t planned on watching the parade. We ran into the ropes, quite literally, and decided to check it out. So glad we did. You really loved it. And Mima bought you a Mickey balloon right before it started. That balloon helped us find our stroller the rest of the day and annoyed Daddy by constantly bumping him in the face as he pushed it around, hehe. It made a great photo op for Momma too. Overall, a great investment.

The parade was spaced out just enough that the current float would pass us by before we could see the next act coming around the corner and that was your favorite part. You’d wait for the next one to round the bed and when you spotted it, you’d smile and point. Yay!

Teacups were probably your favorite true ride. It was one of the ones that Tia really wanted to take you on and Mima and Tia had a great time spinning your around. You really liked it. These things are not my favorite. The older I get, the more motion sickness I get. But I’ll brave them for you, baby. It’s worth those smiles.

The second day was just the three of us and we filled in all the gaps, riding all the rides we couldn’t fit in on day one. I took even fewer photos on day two, but here’s a few of you waiting in line to see Nemo from the submarine (you were utterly fascinated, I don’t think you blinked the entire ride) in your cute little Minnie ears.

That’s Daddy getting your nose. You think that’s hilarious and then become very concerned until he “puts it back.”

And that’s what you call a million dollar smile, at the happiest place on earth, on one of the happiest days we’ve shared together yet.

Amanda - Sooooo awesome!! Can’t wait to take Seth!

Kelly Hoover - Such great shots from The Happiest Place On Earth : D She is such a sweet little thing!

Big Day – Turning Two!

We did a simple last-minute birthday celebration this year. I mad you some scratch white chocolate raspberry cupcakes, Daddy bought some balloons and Mima, Papi and Tia Carmen came over for burgers, presents and cake. It was great. Simple, unstressful, full of love and laughter (although we did miss Auntie and Granny and Grandpa!) And the next day we all went to Disneyland for your first visit to the happiest place on earth (those photos coming up in a later post).

You did amazing opening your presents. Last year you were a baby. You watched us rip a couple open, but you didn’t participate. This year you dug tissue paper out of all the bags, ripped paper and gasped at every new revelation. Seriously, we were all in stiches. I think you got a contact high from the rest of us who are so in love with you. And you put on a show, little miss. 🙂

Some gift highlights? Awesome books from the Tranmers (a real playable piano book, a puzzle book, books that came with necklaces), and also a tea set which you haven’t stopped playing with since that night. Tia Carmen got you a camera which you immediately took very seriously and snapped a photo of me when asked to do so. And she also gave you some party blowers which you figured out right away and found exceptionally entertaining. Between everyone you got a whole new wardrobe of clothes and jewelry. Me and Daddy got you a play makeup set (it’s all made of wood, and really cute), which you also love and have played with every day since.

After dinner we sang, and let you blow out a candle – which you did by yourself to my surprise. I warned beforehand that the candle was hot, not to touch it, just to blow. You looked at me very seriously, and then gave this face as you watched Daddy light it up. HAHA. Apparently I fostered some caution into that little mind of yours. So cute. And then, you blew it out! My big girl.

I can’t believe another year has gone by. I love you baby. I’m so glad you’re our girl.

Happy Second Birthday! And many more…

angie - I just want to reach into my computer and squeeze her, she is so cute! Love these pictures. Such amazing shots! Love her refelction in the table. My favorite: wearing the glasses! OH MAN! I just love her!

Amanda - Dude, seriously, I cannot believe she’s two!! Big day indeed 🙂 Love the pictures, and her little expressions. Can’t wait to see the Disneyland pics!!

A Typical Day at 24 Months

Adela Lane, you are now 2 years old, and so far it’s anything but terrible. Yes, you are opinionated, you test boundaries, you are a lot of work, it’s not always easy. But in all honestly, the hard moments? They’re maybe 5-10% of the total experience. I don’t want you to grow up thinking that I thought your childhood was perfect. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but I am honest in this blog. I want you to know that. I’m not painting a perfect childhood for you. I really am this happy to be your Mom. And you really are as wonderful as I make you out to be. You changed my life. But I LOVE being your mom. It’s truly better than anything else I could possibly want to be doing. And that’s not a rosy coloring of the truth. It’s the truth. You are a blessing, 100% of the time. I love you, WE love you, with all our hearts and I think you are the most amazing person I have ever known.

These monthly updates are a time for me to talk about challenges we’re facing as well as the good times. I remember a time when most of what I talked about was all our challenges with nursing, hehe. Can’t say I miss that battle. 🙂 Right now, when I sit down to right these updates, it isn’t the challenges that come to mind. It’s the cute stuff you’re doing. I’m sure in the future, there will be times when the opposite is true. But for now, it’s gonna be another light-hearted post, more cute stuff, because you are a QT.

In no particular order, things I want to remember about you and your sweet little personality at 24 months…

*You’ve learned how to squeeky smack when you purse your lips and kiss. That classic kiss sound. And you want to test it out on us all the time. You’ve been kissing for a long time, and you kind of popped your lips apart, but this genuine smooch sound, that’s  new this month.

*Talking is still really slow in coming. It’ll be interesting to see what the Dr says next month when we take you in for your 2 year check up. You do add words slowly though. You now say “Num” when you think something is delicious or just want a bite of whatever I’m eating. Mima has also taught you to aaaaalmost say “I love Momma”. In reality you say, “Eye OOh Momma”. 🙂 The other day, Mima and I swear you said “I don’t know” as clear as day. But you won’t do it again. You also said cracker the other day when you were desperate to get some off the counter. You’re starting to do that a lot, say words when you’re not thinking about them. But ask you to say it again, no way. You are so stubborn about it. It’s part of who you are. We don’t understand it, but it’s okay. We’ll figure it out.

* You do this new thing to add to the wealth of affection you give to us. And it’s so sweet it literally has made more than one person tear up. You will randomly grab our faces in your hands, look us in the eye, smile and then hug. You could not be sweeter. You pulled this move on Mima while we were waiting in line for It’s a Small World at Disneyland just as the Disney snow started falling. I think that might have been the happiest moment of Mima’s life. I’m sure she’d at least claim it’s in the top 10.

*You learned how to hold your two fingers up to show you’re 2 years old. We have to help get your thumb in position to hold down your fingers, but you will ask us to help you do it and then beam with profound concentration when you manage to hold it there for a moment. You learned to do this the day before your second birthday, thanks to Mima.

* You love playing pretend. You pull out your tea set and your make up kit more than anything else these days. You spray and blow dry hair, put on lipstick, paint nails and serve tea and cakes with milk and sugar to anyone in the general vicinity.

*You are still obsessed with Itsy Bitsy Spider and ask for us to sing it by making your spider climb at least once per day. You’ve added to that Open Them Shut Them which you now love equally as much, and you do all the motions along with us.

* Go Away Big Green Monster is officially your first book obsession. We read it at your request (a hearty roar) at least 2-5 times per day, at bed time and before naps. This morning it was the first thing you asked for when Daddy got you up and him reading it to you was the sweet scene I walked in on when I wandered into your room. Originally I borrowed it from the library. When I had to take it back and you kept asking for it, I ordered it as a Christmas present, wrapped it and put it under the tree. When you kept asking for it, we opened the present early.

*A couple weeks ago you learned how to “jump” – in quotations because it’s more like a quick 2-step. But it’s really cute and you’re very proud. We  play follow the leader around our kitchen/living room. We march, jump, hop, spin, go fast, go slow. It’s fun.

*You love the word “no” of course. But you say it with the slight “d” in front of it. dOooooh. And you say it a lot.

* When you get excited, or just want to move fast you have a really adorable, girly walk that is almost a twist. You rotate your hips when you walk. It makes us laugh.

*You’re starting to get good at your number and alphabet puzzles. You can match up probably 50-70% of them on your own. We’re getting better at basic colors and matching. You are very independent and have to be in the mood to participate in learning activities like this. I almost have to trick you into thinking it’s your idea. Otherwise, it’s a no go. But you can do it when you want to.

*When you’re figuring something out – like say I ask you which balloon is pink – you put your finger up to your lip, which you put off tot he side, and say “hmmmm…” while figuring it out. Seriously. It’s the most group up gesture, and it’s really cute.

More pics from your Birthday and from Disneyland coming up next…. Kisses! XXOO

Tot School – Buried Treasure Activity

There are so many idea out there for rice bins and sensory bins. I kind of threw a bunch of ideas together and made you a buried treasure activity. Threw some dollar store jewelry in a bin, covered it with rice (much less messy and easy to clean up than sand), and have you a shovel. You totally adored this activity. Your eyes lit up every time you found something new, and you’d put it on immediately (or put it on Daddy, when he walked in to check on us before heading outside to put up Christmas lights). That’s it. I’ll let the pics do the rest of the talking. 🙂
