First Firsts of 2011

We’re over 2 months into 2011, so it’s time to catch up on a couple of the stand out “first times” of the year so far!

January 5, 2011 – Your First tooth brushing! At first you were a little hesitant, then you got a taste of your special toothpaste and you were all about it! You let me, then Daddy try and then you did it by yourself! It’s to the point now (2 months later) where I can hardly get it away from you. You make the sign (for “toothbrush”) all the time and cry when I have to take it away. You would walk around with a toothbrush (and drool) hanging out of your mouth all day if I let you.

January 6, 2011 – Well, I didn’t write it down, so I’m not entirely sure WHEN you technically got 8 teeth, but that’s how many you have now and it happened really recently. Your smile is the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen.

January 7, 2011 – First hair cut. well, really it was just a bang cut. You had all these fine little hairs that were poking you in the eyes so I chopped them off. You look so grown up. And adorable as ever.

January 15, 2011 – First time you really REALLY walked on your own. We’re on vacation at the beach in Carlsbad and Mima has been holding on to your overalls and slowing letting go. It tricks you into thinking you’re getting help. You feel brave and you will walk 7 or 8 steps without falling over. You’re building up that confidence! You’ll also go for it if there is a big piece of furniture or a person within 3 or 4 steps.

January 16, 2011 – First time you ate dirt. And I let you. Hehe. You weren’t a fan.

January 16, 2011 – Your first Swimper. So cute! You did pretty well in the lukewarm kiddy pool. And you totally thought you were hot stuff in that gigantic Nemo diaper.

January 23, 2011 – The first time you fed yourself with a spoon. We were having a girl’s day in Carlsbad while Daddy worked and we walked to a yogurt shop. I let you get it all over your pretty sweater. You had so much fun, it was totally worth it.

January 27, 2011 – First Happy Meal. You got a “kitty bing” – a mini my little pony, one of your very favorite toys. The look on your face when you saw her was priceless. The food, not so much. You had one bite of your chicken nuggets and one fry. I guess you weren’t hungry. But you did like your chocolate milk. And it’s so cute to watch you learn how to play with toys the way they are designed to be played with.

Another example of learning to play with toys… you loooove your Elmo cell phone, or any cell phone, or any toy phone. You hold it right up to your ear and babble, then hold it out to me and wait for me to say “hello.” I don’t have a “first time” date for this one, but you started really playing with toys sometime this month. It’s really sweet to watch. You’re growing up so fast! You’re going to be hearing that a lot… your whole life.

January 27, 2011 – First Tutu. It’s a Kaiya Eve Pettiskirt technically, a gift from my old library boss, Penny. There’s a pic of you in it in my last post. I put it on over your clothes and you prace around like a little ballerina. You are such a girl, and I love it! You seem to adore being in dresses, wearing bracelets, having your hair brushed. You are very feminine, even now.

March 2, 2011 – Wow, a whole month has gone by? I’m slacking. I’m sure you’ve had firsts that I’ve forgotten to record before now. Hmm… well, yesterday you figured out how to drink from a straw. We’ve been trying to get you to do it for a long time. All of the sudden while we were getting dinner at Kimi Grill with Mima, it clicked for you. You also started feeding yourself with a spoon. You have the scooping motion down, it’s getting it all in your mouth that remains the challenge. You LOVE it though and will eat almost anything if we give you your own spoon with which to eat it. And you’re doing amazingly well.

March 8, 2011 – Your first ride in your big girl car seat!!! You’re finally big enough. You are so petite that we had to wait until 15 months to let you do something that a lot of 1 year olds are already doing. Safety first! But we are all soooo glad you finally get to face forward and be a part of the group. 🙂

It’s not everything new and interesting you’ve done. In fact, it seems horribly inadequate, but at least it’s something. It’s hard to keep up with all the amazing things you figure out every day. I’m going to keep trying.

I love you, baby girl!
